Over the course of a decade, Derrick and his neighbors stand up to powerful corporate interests and politicians and face Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil disaster in their struggle for self-determination and environmental justice.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t<\/div> <div  class=\"divider\"><\/div><div class=\"col span_12 testimonial_slider\" data-autorotate=\"\"><div class=\"slides\"><blockquote><p>\"This intimate film tells a gigantic story \u2014 about race, about power, about so-called development. Glisson, William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation<\/span><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div><div  class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Filmmaker Leah Mahan worked on the documentary for a dozen years and was invited to collaborate with world-class creative advisors as a fellow at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/history.sundance.org\/events\/1079\">Sundance Institute Documentary Editing and Story Lab<\/a>. <i>Come Hell or High Water<\/i> won the\u00a0Audience Award for Documentary Feature\u00a0when it premiered at the New Orleans Film Festival in October 2013. A sneak preview hosted by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/workingfilms.org\/blog\/?p=2894\">Reel Power<\/a>\u00a0project was held that month at Power Shift, a national gathering of 8,000 youth leaders held in Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t<\/div> <div  class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>The film had its <a href=\"http:\/\/leahmahan.com\/comehellorhighwater\/2014\/04\/11\/come-hell-high-water-celebration-d-c\/\">Washington, D.C. premiere<\/a> on March 30, on the final day of the\u00a0Environmental Film Festival in the Nation\u2019s Capital. The theme of the 22nd annual festival,\u00a0<i>Our Cities, Our Planet<\/i>, examined &#8220;the challenges posed by Earth\u2019s urban environments and the efforts of the world\u2019s cities to balance environmental and economic needs.\u201d The free film screening at the\u00a0Carnegie Institution for Science was followed by a panel discussion with special guests:\u00a0Derrick Evans\u00a0of\u00a0Turkey Creek;\u00a0Leslie Fields, National Environmental Justice Director for the Sierra Club; filmmaker\u00a0Leah Mahan;\u00a0<i>Grist<\/i>\u00a0writer\u00a0Brentin Mock; and\u00a0Reilly Morse,\u00a0president of the Mississippi Center for Justice.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">On April 9, Dr. Robert Bullard, the \u201cfather of environmental justice,\u201d hosted a screening of the film at the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University, where he serves as Dean. Guests included Derrick Evans and Houston environmental justice leaders. Dr. Bullard says, \u201cThis powerful documentary illustrates a classic case of environmental injustice and exposes raw in-your-face Mississippi racial politics. <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Come Hell or High Water<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> is a perfect lesson that we are not living in a post-racial era.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The documentary was shown on April 24 at a gathering of Gulf Coast community leaders in Mobile, Alabama. The annual <a href=\"http:\/\/leahmahan.com\/comehellorhighwater\/2014\/04\/29\/special-screenings-american-film-showcase\/\">Justice Leadership Summit<\/a>\u00a0is hosted by the Center for Fair Housing. The director, Teresa Fox-Bettis, describes the impact of the film on Mobile residents: \u201cWe were moved to tears. We need tangible evidence to show the community why it is so important to not give up, no matter what.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">On April 29, <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Come Hell or High Water<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0premiered on public television on the WORLD Channel series\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/worldchannel.org\/programs\/america-reframed\/\"><i>America Reframed<\/i><\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">. Through the lens of 26 independent films, <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">America Reframed<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> tells the many stories of a transforming American\u00a0culture and its broad diversity.\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Come Hell or High Water<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> will stream on the series website for 30 days after the broadcast and be available for order through Bullfrog Films. In late May the film will be featured at the San Francisco Green Film Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The documentary will be part of <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/americanfilmshowcase.usc.edu\/\">American Film Showcase<\/a>\u00a02014<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, a program funded by the State Department\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts that aims to highlight the value of film in fostering understanding and cooperation, dialogue and debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">While producing the film, Mahan worked with Derrick Evans and the Gulf Coast Fund for Community Renewal and Ecological Health to create\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bridgethegulfproject.org\/blog\">Bridge the Gulf<\/a>,\u00a0a community media project<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0that has been a resource to people and organizations across the Gulf South since it launched in 2010; a redesign of the website launched in late March with support from the Independent Television Service. Bridge the Gulf\u00a0places the Turkey Creek story in a broader context, connecting viewers to a network of Gulf Coast community journalists and storytellers with deep roots in diverse communities and fields who report on pressing social and environmental issues.\u00a0The project has drawn the attention of MSNBC, the BBC, NPR and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The documentary is part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.screeninghq.org\/films\/details\/95\/come-hell-or-high-water-the-battle-for-turkey-creek\">Reel Power<\/a><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, a collaborative of award-winning documentary filmmakers, individual leaders and organizations working to address climate change and the long-term impact of destructive resource extraction.\u00a0Through targeted and public screening events, strategy convenings, and hands-on trainings coordinated by Working Films and supported by Chicken and Egg Pictures, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, and the Putnam Foundation, Reel Power is positioning\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Come Hell or High Water<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0and other high impact films to promote and advance new energy solutions and a clean and just energy future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Come Hell or High Water: The Battle for Turkey Creek<\/i> is a co-production of Zamler Productions, LLC and the Independent Television Service (ITVS), produced in association with Mississippi Public Broadcasting, with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
