Turkey Creek twist – mayor indicted
I’ve interviewed two of Gulfport’s mayors while making TURKEY CREEK. In 2003 Mayor Ken Combs sat down with me to explain why he’d called the opponents to a development on 1,300 acres of land in the Turkey Creek watershed “a bunch of dumb bastards” (!). Combs was replaced just a few months before Katrina by Brent Warr, who I interviewed in January of 2006. The city had been devastated by the hurricane and the Turkey Creek watershed was at the center of the region’s economic development plans. I asked Warr how he’d balance the concerns of residents against those of business and industry. Now Warr has been indicted on charges he cheated the federal government of recovery funds.
